Michael MacDonald, the marine botanist and marine biologist who created the popular Botany book, has created a new guide to understanding marine botanical life.
Marine Botanic Gardens (MBGs) are the largest collection of plants in the world, accounting for some 80 percent of all the species in the ocean.
The new book, Marine Botanica: An Introduction to the Biology of Plants in the Ocean, aims to help marine biologists understand the diversity of plants and their functions.
“I’ve always been fascinated by marine plants, and I thought I’d do a little research on the biodiversity of plants on the planet,” said Macdonald.
“As I became more familiar with the plants, I noticed that they were a little bit neglected.
It’s not uncommon for me to get emails from people who have seen photos of a coral, but they haven’t seen a reef.
I thought it would be nice to take that photo and bring it to life, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”
The book aims to provide an introduction to marine plants and how they work, and it is designed to complement the Botany books and videos.
Macdonald’s MBG website includes information on the species, how to find them and how to keep them, and he says that the book is a “tremendsome contribution” to marine biology.
“The marine botanic gardens are not only a fascinating place to see, but also a valuable resource for all those interested in marine biology,” Macdonald said.
“These are not just the largest collections of plants anywhere, they’re also the largest of all living things on the surface of the earth.
They’re among the most complex of all life on Earth, with a variety of life that is not easily explained.”
Marine Botanical Gardens: An Introductory Guide to the Life and Function of Plants on the Earth will be published in June by HarperCollins.
“When I was a kid growing up, my family would come down to my house and play with the animals, and my mother would play with them and teach them how to eat,” MacDonald said.
He added that he thinks his book will provide a “glamorous” and educational experience for the younger generations of marine biologists.
“It’s really important for them to be able to see and interact with plants and understand how they’re connected to their environment,” he said.
Marine botanical gardens are the oldest and most important species of plants, Macdonald explained.
“They’re really ancient and they’re really important.
They help maintain our oceans health.
They play an important role in maintaining the marine ecosystem.”
A key element in the creation of the book, he said, is that the plants “are not just ‘common’ plants, but are really unique.”
The key to understanding how marine plants function is the diversity that exists in them, he explained.
He notes that the most common marine plants include sea urchins, clams, sea ureas, and some fish.
He adds that the marine plants of the oceans have evolved over time to provide a wide variety of services.
“There are hundreds of species of marine plants on our planet, and the marine environment is diverse,” he explained, adding that marine plants can help regulate temperature, oxygen levels, carbon dioxide levels, and other factors that affect ocean health.
Marine plants provide us with a range of useful services, from a food source to a carbon sink, as well as a carbon buffer to protect our oceans from climate change.
“We have so many species that we don’t really understand well enough, and these are the things that we really need to understand,” Mac Donald said.
The book will also be available in a companion DVD called The Marine Botani: An Integrated Guide to Marine Plants, available June 25 on the HarperCollins website.
“If you’re a young marine biologist and you want to know more about marine plants or the animals that live in the oceans, this book will be perfect,” he added.
“You can’t go wrong with a book like this.”
